Additionally, these shrimp are known to consume the Aiptasia or "glass" anemone which is regarded as a pest and is difficult to eradicate from home salt-water aquariums. Lysmata wurdemanni is a reef safe cleaning animal which consumes parasites and dead or diseased tissue from other animals, and is therefore used in marine aquariums. This process is very brief and occurs immediately post-moult, while the female's cuticle is new and soft. If the chemicals are right, courtship may commence and, if courtship goes well, copulation will ensue. The male will then 'taste' the female's contact pheromones with his aesthetascs to make sure she is a suitable mate. Guided by these chemical signals, males make their way to the female and will approach her. These pheromones are released 2–8 hours prior to female moulting. Males use olfactory organs (aesthetascs) on their antennules to detect soluble female sex pheromones (distance pheromones). Lysmata wurdemanni employs a 'pure searching' tactic for mate-finding in which the males are constantly searching for receptive females. During this hermaphroditic stage the shrimp gradually lose their male organs, likely because more energy is being allocated to the development of female reproductive organs. In the euhermaphrodite stage the shrimp act as a male between moults and as a female immediately following a moult. However, under certain conditions some males never change to hermaphrodites. It has four moults as a male before changing sexes to become a euhermaphrodite. This means that it begins as a male but may later become a hermaphrodite. Lysmata wurdemanni is a protandric simultaneous hermaphrodite. Knight), as well as her son with Joe, Joey. It was then I started to study Go and thought: “oh, here we go again… another CLI”.Īfter I complained about that to a colleague he said: Why the heck don't you use `asdf` for all these languages?Īnd my mind explodes because of course, if I was bothered dealing with that, someone in the plant was bothered as well, and most importantly: he/she had already created a tool that solves this problem.Īsdf is a CLI tool that solves the runtime version management in a well-architected and elegant way: by being a single tool for all runtimes. Ok, now I have 2 CLIs to handle the same problem. When I googled to find a similar solution as rvm, I found NVM (Node Version Manager), which does the same thing as rvm but for the Node runtime. Luckily the backend team had a wiki page recommending to use a tool called RVM (Ruby Version Manager), which as the name already explains itself, is a CLI to control multiple ruby versions in our machine.Īfter a while coding front-end applications, I started to see more often the same problem happening with node js. To avoid consuming the production/staging environment while I was coding my client-side application, I needed to run a couple of servers in my machine and, again, they required different ruby versions. In the first company I started work as a software developer, all backend apps were written in ruby and well… the exact same problem. This was very overwhelming, especially because I didn’t have much experience and back then my professors and colleagues didn’t know a better way of easing this problem. But wait, I already have Java 6 in my machine… damn” “Oh, this one uses Java 5, I need to download the runtime. Back in 2013 when I was learning development in college, I remember having a lot of trouble running some projects because they rely on a specific Java version.
Below, we rounded up some plant stands we like - along with a few bookshelves, end tables, step stools, art-supply carts, wooden crates, and more things you can also definitely put plants on. No matter what kind of “stand” you choose, though, you’ll want something that has an open design to let in light and that can support a decent amount of weight and hold up to the occasional water spill. : Plant Shelves 1-48 of over 10,000 results for 'Plant Shelves' Results Price and other details may vary based on product size and color. If you have a medium-size plant teetering off the edge of your windowsill, why not put it on top of a stool instead, or a bar cart, or floating shelves? If you’re a bit of a plant hoarder, with every square inch of floor and table surfaces covered, you can use rolling utility carts, shoe benches, or bookcases to better organize your collection. Thankfully, a plant stand can really be any object you can place a plant on, and one sweep of the internet will reveal that you can put plants on lots of things. Both styles can be good-looking and super-functional, but they’re also a bit limiting. This impressive idea was custom-built to fit the exact dimensions of a narrow wall. Both the young leaves and flowers of the borage plant are edible and nutritious.Borage also produces an abundance of flowers that attract pollinators to the area, which includes my apple tree.During the growing season, these leaves are cut from the plant and laid on the ground to act as a “green” mulch. Borage is a reseeding annual that produces large amounts of nitrogen-rich leaves. Here are some examples of those herbal functions with the annual herb, borage: Each herb performs multiple functions, and all the plants together create a growing area that is sustainable. This relationship between plants (and even plants and people) is called “stacking functions”.įor example, the apple trees in my yard are all planted with groups of perennial and annual herbs (along with other plants). One way to achieve sustainability in garden design is to group plants in a way that enables each plant to help the others. Annual plants are also used in appropriate ways to create garden systems that can essentially take care of themselves. Permaculture is a particular kind of design that involves using perennial plants to create permanent agriculture (the origin of the word permaculture), or more simply put, sustainable gardens. Stacking Functions – a Permaculture Perspective on Herb Placement If you’re a new gardener and/or new to growing herbs, take your time and don’t rush yourself. (Keep reading for a downloadable worksheet to make this brainstorming easier.) You also may discover that you already have a preference for one design option over another as you brainstorm. You may not know everything you will eventually know about herbs and design, but you know more than you think you do. CB “Psycho” (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) “ Psycho” Everett Collection / Everett Collection (Later on, during the Siege of Babylon, there’s a kiss between two men.) Some of that libertinism would pop up again in Griffith’s later “Orphans of the Storm,” and it would carry on through the early sound era with Claudette Colbert famously taking a nude bath (though only seen from the back) in asses’ milk in 1932’s “A Sign of the Cross.” But even a couple of decades earlier, Griffith was pushing boundaries in his own right. Griffith’s “Intolerance” features a full-on orgy with women wearing see-through fabrics or bathing in the nude. Silent movies and early sound films have all manner of transgressive content. In the U.S., the self-censorship of the Hays Office wouldn’t come about until the late ‘20s (and wasn’t enforced at all until Joseph Breen took charge in 1934). It may surprise today’s viewers just how liberated many silent films are in their depictions of sexuality. All are movies that wouldn’t have the same artistic impact without these moments.Ĭhristian Blauvelt, Christian Zilko, Jude Dry, Kate Erbland, Ryan Lattanzio, and Samantha Bergeson contributed to this story. Below is an incomplete timeline of the nude scene throughout cinema history. The best nude scenes convey vulnerability, intimacy, eros, and so much more. One place to start that reassessment is to look at the history of the nude scene since the silent era. So maybe we should take nudity seriously again. Although, the unsettling reaction nudity can elicit in audiences is once again getting explored with some frequency in the horror genre see scariest scenes in the hugely popular “It Follows” and “Hereditary” for starters. It’s been a quarter-century since nudity was a central feature - and dramatic plot point - of what was then the most widely popular Hollywood film in decades: “ Titanic.” Bared skin in a similar manner in a top blockbuster in 2023 or any other recent year seems unlikely. Nudity is most frequently used in mainstream entertainment as a punchline. Heather Graham Was ‘So Nervous’ About ‘Boogie Nights’ Nude Scene: It Was ‘Terrifying’Īt times, it can be difficult write about onscreen nudity in anything but jokey terms, especially since nudity has become a fixture of comedy. Are we somehow invading their privacy? Are they invading ours? What should we feel about this parasocial interaction, particularly when it is presented in an overtly sexualized context? So when nudity enters the (literal) picture, it complicates the relationship between viewer and viewed. It’s “content” that deserves an “advisory,” or something akin to “porn,” however the Supreme Court is classifying that these days.Īs many have noted, the very nature of the actor’s job demands the audience look at them. But the nude scene in movies is rarely discussed alongside a Canova marble statue or Manet’s “Olympia.” Movies blur the boundaries between “real life” and artistic indirection so thoroughly that people discuss nude scenes in movies as practically everything but art. The history of painting and sculpture is full of nude portraiture, which is regularly and comfortably classified as art. That line from Akira Kurosawa’s “Ikiru” sums up a lot of feelings people seem to have about nudity in film. Repositioning and resizing on FreeCAD sometimes can be tricky, so I typically use a combination of different methods to reach the positioning I want. Next, we'll adjust the size and positioning so that we can "glue" this shape on the existing pencil holder.įinally, we need to adjust the position and size of the logo so that it fits the external wall of the pen holder. You now have a solid shape that is already printable. Then, we'll use the "Pad" tool from the top tool bar to pad this sketch into a solid. We'll create a new body, using the "Create New Body" icon on the top tool bar (Part Design Workbench) and move this sketch to it. Working with this shape in a separate body will be an easier approach, then we can fuse both parts together later on. This sketch's path might not coincide with the positioning of the original path, and that's OK, we'll move it around once we have a solid part. You'll notice that a new sketch was created. This tool has an icon with red and blue shapes. Then, we'll transform this path into a sketch, using the "Draft to Sketch" tool. First, we'll use the "Upgrade Shape" tool, which looks like an arrow pointing upwards. We'll now move to the "Draft" workbench, where we can turn this path into a sketch. This shape is not an actual solid yet on FreeCAD it is just a path. When prompted, select "SVG as Geometry (ImportSVG)" in the dialog box that will appear. In case you don't have that file available to you now, you can download this FreeCAD project file containing the base penholder object and get started from there. To get started, you'll need to open the pen holder source file that we created in the previous tutorial of this series. You can create a simpler shape using the geometric tools on the left (a square or a circle, for instance, if you just want to practice), or you can download my own SVG version of this logo in this link. Then, save the file as SVG.Ĭan't get the shape right? No worries, vectorizing can be tricky if you are not used to it (but totally worth practicing). Once you're satisfied, delete the base PNG shape and set the fill color of your vectorized shape to black or any other color. Use the node selection tool (the second tool from top to bottom) to adjust the shape to look more like the original. Use it to draw a vector over the shape:Īfter the initial shape is done, you will probably need to adjust some things. In the left tool bar, you'll find the vector tool. Inkscape is a free and open source graphics software that can be used to create vectorized images and export them as SVG and other formats.įor this example, we're gonna use Star War's Rebel Alliance logo, because it's a rather simple shape and of course also because it's pretty cool:ĭownload the PNG file and open it with Inkscape. In this guide, we'll create an SVG file from scratch using Inkscape. For instance, something with the form of a letter "A" would need an outside shape that would get padded, and another shape to make a pocket or a boolean operation (difference) to remove that portion from inside. If your SVG has multiple shapes, or a hole inside the shape, you'll need to think through each form separately, creating the individual shapes and using the appropriate boolean operations on FreeCAD to get to the result you want. Ideally, your SVG file should have a single shape. This will give you a lot of freedom when designing your original objects. You can skip step 1 if you already have a simple SVG file that you plan on using, but it's useful to learn how to create your own shapes using a software like Inkscape. To pack in more useful tips, I'll also include how to create an original SVG file from a shape found on the web, using Inkscape. In this guide, which is part 3 of a tutorial series about FreeCAD for beginners, you'll learn how to import an SVG file and transform it into a shape that can be fused into your 3D model. In a previous post in this FreeCAD series, we built a pen holder using the Sketcher + Part Design workbenches. |
